Tuthill Vacuum Boosters

Tuthill Vacuum BoosterMany industrial applications for vacuum boosters require a deeper vacuum and increased volumetric flow, with pressures that vary from 0.1 to 100 mmHg.  These vacuum booster applications are commonly found in industrial sectors such as chemical, pharmaceutical, vacuum furnace, and steel degassing. The processes involve degassing, distillation, drying, freeze drying, transformer drying, metallurgical treatment, and CVD. When specifying a vacuum pump for these applications, a vacuum booster configuration can be used to cost-effectively enhance the performance of a smaller pump to avoid the expense of a larger one.

Vacuum boosters are basically positive-displacement dry pumps. They remove gas by moving (2) two-lobe rotors at high RPMs in opposite directions. They are usually limited to inlet pressures of ½ an atmosphere when they are employed to discharge an atmosphere separately. When vacuum boosters are used with another vacuum pump in a series configuration they provide unique advantages such as higher pumping capacity and lower pressures with reduced power consumption and lower costs. The additional pump used can be an oil-sealed piston or vane pump, a liquid ring pump sealed with a variety of different sealants from water, solvents, or oil. It can also be a dry vacuum pump.

Tuthill vacuum boosters are the trusted choice among design engineers for many reasons. They optimize cost savings and reliability through enhanced performance characteristics. They provide the added benefit of smooth, quiet operation through unique features such as helical gears and a five- bearing design.
