Determining the Right Blower for Your System

Many industrial processes require air flow for cooling, exhausting, conveying, ventilation and aeration. Industrial blowers provide the ideal solution, and are available in a wide variety of configurations to suit most any application needs.

Important basic factors to consider in selecting the right industrial blower include:

  • Application
  • Blower Type
  • Port Design
  • Parameters of Flow Capacity
  • Electrical Ratings
  • Dimensions

Though blowers and fans are commonly interchanged, ASME defines blowers as having a ratio of discharge pressure over suction pressure between 1. 11 and 1.2.  Anything below this ratio is considered a fan and anything above it is considered a compressor. Industrial blower design styles include: centrifugal flow, regenerative, and rotary lobe.

Centrifugal Blowers
Centrifugal Blower
Centrifugal blowers can be single or multi-stage. Single stage blowers are a good choice for applications that require uniform air flow across a full volume, including ventilation and conveying operations. Multi-stage blowers are suited for applications that require variable flow at a steady pressure, such as convection drying, water treatment and chemical gas compression, central vacuum systems, and more.

Regenerative Blowers
Regenerative Blowers
Regenerative blowers are the ideal solution for moving large volumes of air at lower pressures or vacuums. Regenerative blowers are used in applications such as: pneumatic conveying, sewage aeration, vacuum lifting and packaging, pond aeration, packaging equipment, dryers, dust / smoke removal, industrial vacuum systems, soil vapor extraction, and more.

Rotary Lobe Blowers
Rotary Lobe Blower
Rotary lobe blowers, or positive displacement blowers, have higher efficiency at moderate compression ratios, and are most efficient in the compression ratios of 1.1 to 2. They are well suited for use in applications that require relatively constant flow rate at varying discharge pressures.  Rotary lobe blowers are commonly used in applications such as pneumatic conveying, aeration in ETP, cement plants, water treatment plants for filter backwash, aquaculture, aeration, and more.
